Putting Cruise Command in an Eagle without the Cruise
« on: September 25, 2011, 10:54:51 PM »
I am thinking of putting cruise command in my 87 Eagle. It does not have cruise command now. I was wondering how difficult or easy it is to do adn if anyone has done the factory install conversion. Is it a plug n play?

Nothing is plug and pray in an older carr, but I have installed aftermarket cc setups before.  Nothing too major involved.

My 83 has cc but it does not work.  Rather than spend who-knows-how-much-money trying to get it fixed, I've considered installing aftermarket.
I have not had much luck finding one I was sure would work in the Eagle.  I finally found a place that has one.  It requires buying 3 components for a total of $257 + shipping.  I'm not prepared to spend that much on it at this time.
I'm right 98% of the time, and I don't care about the other 3%.

I have had working Cruise Control in my Eagles in the past. I dislike the factory unit. Its either too aggressive or downshifts too often, but I've always felt like the Eagle was out of control while it was on. The engine's consistantly higher RPMs and tone sounded like it was accelerating wildly even when it was just maintaining speed. I always felt like I was driving 100 mph with that thing on, its really creepy. It seems to get very angry at hills and attack them violently, so I also suspect the fuel mileage will be atrocious with it on.

I like the cruise control in my Jeep. I suggest retaining the Cruise Control when you install your 4.0 head and MPI system.

The cruise control button is built into the steering column. You will need to switch steering columns to put a factory unit into a car that didn't have one. A Jeep column does not have the same end or bolt pattern at its base, but its upper housing is the same. It seems possible to put the external and internal parts from a Jeep Cherokee steering column on an Eagle column, but it is a difficult dissassembly.

Bought a new 1980 concord that did not have cc.Told the dealer I wanted cc installed. Was told it could not be done and they would have to install a complete steering column. So I went to sears and bought a aftermarket unit and installed it.First thing the instructions said to do was cut off the turn signal lever with a hack saw.Once I did that there was no turning back. Instalation was rather straight forward and one finished looked just like the factory unit and worked pretty well.Only way to tell the difference was to look under the car.The unit used maginets glued to the rear of the drive shaft and a pick up unit that was mounted to a bracket and then mounted to the frame and had to be so close to the maginets. Can't remember the distance. There was also a servo mounted under the hood and a small chain connected to the carb linkage. All in all system worked pretty well except the maginets didn't like salt and road grime much and lost several of them. But the system was still working well when I traded the concord in for a new eagle. Hope this helps in some way and good luck on your project.
