Mine did something similar until I replaced the flasher unit with a more heavy duty one.  I did that when I installed the tow hitch, so it could handle the trailer lights.

I no longer have an AMC Eagle, but I am still a fan.

After our fiasco with the Toyota Corolla I got for my wife I believe I am done with Japanese vehicles.

Dude you are preaching to a choir member that is close to becoming an AMC Minister if you know what I mean.

Did you check the blinker fluid?

I couldn't resist, sorry...reminds me of my college days playing pranks on those not so much mechanically inclined.

I agree - check blinker fluid first, then get a heavy duty flasher.
I'm right 98% of the time, and I don't care about the other 3%.

Blinker flasher is separate from the signal flasher.  Blinker flasher is tucked up in the e-brake mechanism area, usually.  Its not the one in the fuse panel.  Yes a HD flasher is what you need.  I found for SX/4's its better to go with ones rated for at least 6 lights.

I should have had one of those in my 97 Olds Cutlass Supreme 2 door. Slow down and it would blink every minute, speed up. real annoying.
