Yep, dirty oil is can be a big factor in failing the test.  I had a relatively new car fail the test, changed the oil, no more problem.

Colorado is funny with emissions....Some counties are super strict and other counties dont even require emissions i live in El Paso county and we dont have to have emissions...thank god cuz none of my cars would pass.

The altitude can cause some problems too especially if your car is adjusted for sea level.
