Clutch Master/Slave
« on: June 12, 2013, 04:08:55 PM »
Ok plain and simple...

Are the clutch master cyl and slave cyl the same on the 151ci as the 258ci

i understand they have different reservoirs but i keep hearing about two different bore sizes and if i recall correctly a few years back i had purchased a master cyl which had a different kind of pushrod/linkage that wasnt able to connect to my clutch pedal...

Well, the parts books show different part numbers for the different engines; so something is different -- I just don't know what.

The only thing I think that would be different would be between the 4 speed vs 5 speed application.

ok maybe thats what it is i have the iron duke with the 4 speed trans, and parts numbers or clue that could point me towards a new setup??

one thing that someone had mentioned to me is the only difference between the two engines is the length of the slave pushrod..

SR4, T4, T5 are identical externally. No difference in clutch parts.

258 Eagle, 151 Eagle, and 151 Spirit are identical clutch and master cylinders.

258 has a shorter pushrod and different end cone. It's about an inch difference and the vehicle cannot drive if you have the wrong pushrod installed. Since a new pushrod comes when you order it, the part number is different. The pushrod is a straight piece of metal dowel that slide through the rubber and rests against the end of the piston inside. It slides right out of the rubber without affecting the slave cylinder itself.

I have two 1981 258 stickshifts with the same hydraulic resevoir as a 151. Stickshift wasn't available in 1980, so I'm guessing it was a change midyear 1981. All of my 258 stickshifts newer than 1981 have the junk plastic tube.

About three years ago I went to order a Clutch Master Cylinder from Rock Auto and they didn't have any. I tried everywhere and anywhere to get one. Eventually a local National Auto guy looked up contact information for a supplier in a catalog and he actually ordered 6 of them for me special order (at $85 a piece) supposedly directly from the people making them. About a year later I got an email from Rockauto advertising a closeout deal on them. I was very surprised because I had ordered everything I could from Rockauto just a short time before. I ordered their whole supply then too.

Since then I haven't ordered any (at one point I had ten spares, now I'm down to four) but I look them up in Rockauto every once in awhile. Their listings change often for whatever reason. I think it's because Rockauto sells auto parts like Amazon sells books. They seem to just coordinate between several big companies.

My opinion now is that if you can't get one from them this month, check back next month. When they're back on sale buy two so you don't have to worry about waiting next time. They are still being made by somebody because it has happened multiple times in the past.
